Provincial Times Founder Calls for Liberal Riding Official to Step Down Over Alleged Conduct at Political Event
A senior Ontario Liberal Party riding association official is facing allegations of inappropriate conduct at a political event, according to an opinion piece published by The Provincial Times, raising questions about internal accountability and adherence to party standards of behaviour.
In an op-ed published Sunday, Provincial Times founder and editor Will Adams alleges that Edward Nixon, identified as president of the Scarborough Southwest Electoral District Association (EDA), engaged in inappropriate and non-consensual behaviour toward a guest at a Liberal political gathering attended by federal and provincial party representatives.
“This was not an awkward interaction,” Adams said. “This was a Liberal Party official abusing his position… while intoxicated — in a setting where constituents and activists have every right to feel safe.”
According to Adams’ account, Nixon appeared visibly intoxicated near the end of the event, displaying slurred speech and impaired awareness. Adams alleges that Nixon forcibly displaced him from his seat, positioned himself next to Adams’ friend also in attendance, and made repeated unsolicited, detailed comments of a sexual and personal nature. The op-ed further alleges that Nixon touched the friends’s hand and shoulder, as well as Adams’ thigh without consent.
Adams writes that the interaction left those involved uncomfortable and concerned about safety, particularly given Nixon’s senior role within the party’s local organizational structure in the GTA. The column calls for Nixon’s removal from his position, arguing that the alleged conduct is incompatible with political leadership responsibilities.
“Edward Nixon must be removed from his position,” Adams wrote. “Not quietly shuffled aside. Not given a talking-to behind closed doors. Removed. Because the standard for political conduct should not be “as long as no one important saw it.”
The Liberal Party of Canada maintains a formal code of conduct governing behaviour at party events, including expectations around professionalism, respect, and personal boundaries. Party rules prohibit harassment, discrimination, and behaviour that creates an unsafe or hostile environment, and outline internal complaint and disciplinary processes for violations. It is not publicly known whether a formal complaint has been submitted under those procedures.
As of publication, neither Nixon nor the Liberal Party has issued a public response addressing the allegations. Opposition parties and external political critics have also not commented publicly on the matter.
The Provincial Times op-ed emphasizes the importance of transparent and meaningful enforcement of internal conduct rules, particularly in spaces where alcohol is present and power dynamics exist between party officials and attendees.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and no law enforcement involvement has been reported. The situation remains a developing matter pending any response from the party or the individual named.
