The federal New Democratic Party officially launched its 2026 leadership race yesterday, beginning the contest that will determine who succeeds Jagmeet Singh at the helm of the party.
“This leadership race is an exciting opportunity for our members and for people across the country who share progressive values,” said NDP President Mary Shortall. “It will spark important conversations about the kind of future we want to build together, rooted in fairness, justice, and hope.”
The party has also released the official rules governing the contest. Prospective candidates face a rigorous application process that reflects the NDP's commitment to diversity, equity, and grassroots participation.
Key Rules for Candidates:
- Applicants must gather 500 signatures from party members in good standing. At least 50 signatures are required from each of the following regions: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia/North, and the Prairies.
- At least 50% of signatures must come from members who do not identify as cisgender men.
- A minimum of 100 signatures must come from equity-seeking groups, including racialized Canadians, Indigenous members, LGBTQ people, and members with disabilities.
- At least 10% of signatures must be from young New Democrats.
- Candidates must submit a $1,500 non-refundable vetting fee and pay a total of $100,000 in staged deposits to appear on the ballot.
- Campaign spending is capped at $1.5 million, with exceptions for child care, disability supports, and fundraising costs.
- Leadership contestants will be chosen through a ranked ballot vote open to party members by the membership cut-off date of January 28, 2026.
The leadership website, leadership.ndp.ca, now hosts the full rules, FAQs, and will soon feature approved candidate profiles and a central hub for campaign events. The results will be announced at the NDP's national convention in Winnipeg on March 29, 2026.
