Stephen Lewis, 1937–2026: A Personal Note on Loss and Decency

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Stephen Lewis today.
Regardless of where one stands on the political spectrum, there is no denying that Stephen Lewis led a life of consequence. From his tenure as leader of the Ontario NDP to his decades of relentless advocacy on the global stage against the HIV/AIDS crisis, he was a figure who commanded attention. He was eloquent, fiercely intelligent, and never shied away from a fight. Love him or disagree with him, he was the kind of political titan we see far too little of in today's era of focus-grouped mediocrity.
His passing, coming just days after his son Avi's election as leader of the federal NDP, adds a profound and bittersweet layer to an already significant moment in Canadian politics. One can only imagine the mix of emotions within the Lewis family over this past week.
Here at The Provincial Times, our thoughts are with Avi and the entire Lewis family. To lose a parent is a singular sorrow, and to do so in the public eye while navigating the demands of a new national leadership role is an immense burden. Whatever political battles lie ahead, there is a time for politics and a time for private grief. We extend our sincere condolences and wish Avi and the whole family strength in the difficult days to come.
Now, on a matter of transparency with you, our readers.
As many of you know, this publication does not pull punches when it comes to holding political figures to account. In the wake of Avi Lewis's leadership victory, we were drafting several op-eds. These pieces were intended to offer a critical examination of his policy proposals, his political history, and what his leadership could mean for the party's provincial wings.
However, out of respect for the Lewis family during this time of mourning, we have decided to put those columns on hold. For the next week or so, we will allow the family their space to grieve without the noise of our commentary, which would only add to what is already an undeniably difficult time.
There will be plenty of time in the weeks and months ahead to debate the future of the NDP, to scrutinize policy, and to engage in the robust exchange of ideas that this country needs. For now, a family has lost a father, and Canada has lost a distinctive voice.
We will return to our regular editorial schedule shortly. In the meantime, let this be a reminder that behind every public figure, no matter how much we may disagree with them, there is a family, there is a personal story, and there is a humanity that deserves to be honoured in moments like these.
