ADAMS: Conservative MP Goes on Baffling Tirade about the Horror of Tampons Being Available in the Men's Room.

Social Issues Dec 15, 2023

The Conservative Party of Canada has completely lost its mind, and Michelle Ferreri's pathetic little bathroom tantrum is the perfect symbol of everything wrong with this party.

For those unaware, Michelle Ferreri, a Conservative Member of Parliament, entered a men's washroom in the House of Commons, pointed her camera at taxpayer-funded tampons, and pretended this was an outrage worthy of national attention. She also committed a hybrid offence by filming in a washroom at all. A small crime, perhaps, but one that speaks volumes about the intellectual calibre of our current opposition.

But the real scandal is not the illegal video. The real scandal is that this woman claims to represent conservatism.

What we are seeing from the Conservative Party today is not conservatism. It is populist theatre performed by people who have never run a business, never met a payroll, and apparently never learned how to use a toilet without having a political crisis.

Michelle Ferreri's video was, of course, transparently transphobic. She knows it. You know it. Even the Liberal MPs she pretends to oppose know it. She entered a men's washroom specifically to complain about menstrual products, knowing full well that those products exist for trans men who work in Parliament.

This is the new Conservative Party strategy: find the most vulnerable minority, manufacture outrage about their existence, and call it "common sense."

And where is the so-called leadership? Where is Pierre Poilievre in all of this? He is too busy cosplaying as a populist revolutionary while standing beside people who promote child abuse conspiracy theories. He speaks at secret rallies where he nods along with transphobic nonsense, then pretends to be a moderate when the cameras are rolling. This is not leadership. This is cowardice dressed in a leather jacket.

The hypocrisy, as always, is breathtaking.

For three years, Michelle Ferreri has sat in Parliament voting against free school lunches for hungry children. She has voted against dental care for seniors who cannot afford to smile. She has never once introduced a bill to make menstrual products affordable for the low-income women who actually struggle to buy them. But when she sees free tampons in a men's room? Suddenly, she is a fiscal conservative warrior, outraged by government waste.

This is what I mean when I say the Conservative Party has become ridiculous and out of touch. They have abandoned any serious discussion about shrinking the state, reducing taxes, or getting government out of our lives. Instead, they obsess over which washroom products are available to which Canadians. They have become the party of bathroom monitors.

Imagine, for one moment, the reaction if a Liberal MP had done this. If Justin Trudeau had walked into the women's washroom, filmed a video complaining about condoms or razors, and then illegally posted it online. The Conservative Party would be demanding resignations. They would call it an invasion of privacy, a violation of parliamentary decorum, a sign of Liberal degeneracy.

But when one of their own does it? Silence. Except for the cheering from the radical fringe.

The truth is that Conservative MPs can get away with this because the media and the public have become numb to their antics. We expect them to be ridiculous now. We expect them to embarrass themselves. And so they do, over and over again, while the real issues facing this country—the crushing debt, the housing crisis, the destruction of our industries—go completely unaddressed.

The party that Michelle Ferreri represents will never be my party. It is a circus of performative outrage, led by people who would rather film themselves in washrooms than actually do the difficult work of governing.

Canada deserves better. And one day, perhaps, Canadians will realize it.
