Guest Contributors & Compensation

The Provincial Times is always open to guest contributors who want to publish thoughtful, evidence-based work on Canadian public life.

We believe good ideas don’t belong to any one ideology, party, or background. What matters is that submissions are serious, well-argued, and grounded in facts.

Who Can Contribute

We welcome submissions from:

  • Independent writers and journalists
  • Academics and policy professionals
  • Activists and community organizers
  • Students and first-time writers
  • Professionals with subject-matter expertise

You do not need prior publication experience. If your work meets our editorial standards, we will work with you to get it ready for publication.

Compensation (Important)

At this time, The Provincial Times does not pay guest contributors.

We are a growing, reader-funded publication, and our finances are not yet in a position to support contributor pay. We believe in being transparent about this upfront.

That said:

  • This is temporary, not ideological
  • Our long-term goal is paid journalism
  • When our financial situation changes, writers will be paid per piece
  • Editorial Board members will be paid at a higher rate than standard contributors

We will clearly announce when paid submissions begin, and no previously unpaid contributor will be excluded from future paid opportunities.

Why Contribute Anyway?

People contribute to The Provincial Times because:

  • Their work reaches an engaged, politically literate audience
  • Articles are edited, fact-checked, and presented professionally
  • Contributors receive a public byline and author page
  • Pieces are promoted across our platforms
  • Contributors are often considered first for future paid roles

For students, early-career writers, and subject-matter experts, this can be a meaningful way to build a public body of work.

Editorial Standards

All submissions must follow our Content Policy.

In short, we require:

  • Evidence-based arguments
  • Clear sourcing where claims are made
  • No hate speech or dehumanization
  • No plagiarism or AI-generated content

Opinion is welcome. Bad-faith argumentation is not.

How to Submit

If you are interested in contributing:

  • Pitch your idea briefly
  • Include relevant background (if any)
  • Disclose any conflicts of interest

If a pitch is accepted, an editor will work with you through the editing and publication process.

A Final Note

We take journalism seriously, even when we are small.

Our commitment is to grow responsibly, treat contributors honestly, and move toward a sustainable model where good work is fairly paid.

If that aligns with your values, we’d be glad to hear from you.
